What is a bar graph?


A bar graph (or bar chart) is a type of chart in which each vertical bar represents a categorical variable (with two or more categories, with no essential ordering). An example of such a variable may be gender (with two or more possible categories, like male and female).

A bar graph is used to compare the frequency of a category by using different bar lengths. If bars are plotted vertically, we talk about a column chart.

With bar and column charts your category – or your independent variable - should be your categorical axis, and the amount – or your dependent variable – should be the numerical axis. In other words, the amounts drive the lengths (if horizontal) or the heights (if vertical) of the bars.

If you publish a project on our web app, it can be accessed through a direct link with a unique ID. If you want to make sure nobody finds your visualizations, keep them unpublished and download them as PDFs, SVGs, or PNGs for private use.
